Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance

Careers education, information, advice and guidance plays a major part in helping students prepare for their transition in to adult life. We aim to help students become more aware of their strengths, interest and the options available to them.

Our Goal

We aim to provide students with up to date and relevant careers education, information, advice and guidance at each transitional stage of their education. They will, therefore have access to unbiased and professional careers support and guidance.

Career advice meetings are available Monday to Friday.

Students can access careers advice in the following ways:

One to one guidance meeting with the school’s Careers Coordinator

One to one guidance meetings: to arrange an individual careers meeting you can:

Pop to see your Careers Coordinator during lunch times in the Careers office
Speak to your Form Tutor
Email the Careers Coordinator

Careers meeting will take place during school hours in the Careers office (Room A110) situated in the corridor between the Maths and Technology departments.

Parents Information Evenings

Your Careers Coordinator will be available at year 9,11,12 and 13 evenings to provide information, advice and guidance to you and your Parents/ Guardians.

Assemblies, Careers Events and Group Work

These will be organised for you by the school in conjunction with your Careers Coordinator.

Careers Provider Access Statement

Introduction

This policy statement sets out the school’s arrangements for managing the access of providers to pupils at the school for the purpose of giving them information about the provider’s education or training offer. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997.

Pupil Entitlement

All pupils in Years 7-13 are entitled:

To find out about technical education qualifications and apprenticeships opportunities, as part of a careers programme which provides information on the full range of education and training options available at each transition point.
To hear from a range of local providers about the opportunities they offer, including technical education and apprenticeships – through options events, assemblies and group discussions and taster events.
To understand how to make applications for the full range of academic and technical courses.

A number of events, integrated into the school careers programme, will provide an opportunity for external career providers to visit King Solomon High School to deliver planned sessions to our students, parents and carers.

Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteer Centre Redbridge is based at RedbridgeCVS and offers information, advice and guidance for anyone who lives, works or studies in Redbridge, who would like to find out more about ways to volunteer.

Voluntary opportunities available in the UK

NCVO are committed to supporting, enabling and celebrating volunteering in all its diversity. Volunteering is someone spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone who they’re not closely related to. Volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual.

NCVO doesn’t broker or place volunteers in charities directly but have a selection of resources to help you find a suitable opportunity

Great life skills experiences delivered via a residential programme of activities. Please note there is a cost for this of £50.00. There is a bursary scheme available which, if you are eligible may fund all or up to 80% of the cost.

A stable careers programme	Every school and college should have an embedded programme of career education and guidance that is known and understood by pupils, parents, teachers, governors and employers.	Our careers platform is suitable for students from Year 7 to 13. Students, parents, governors and staff have 24/7 access. It provides a stable, all-encompassing CEG hub for the entire school. Lesson plans are available to support a school’s careers programme.
Learning from career & Labour Market Information	Every pupil, and their parents, should have access to good quality information about future study options and labour market opportunities. They will need the support of an informed adviser to make best use of available information.	Using key web resources: Students can explore career & labour market information including salary and employment trend data. They can research opportunities after the age of 16 and 18, including apprenticeships and further and higher education.
Addressing the needs of each pupil	Pupils have different career guidance needs at different stages. Opportunities for advice and support need to be tailored to the needs of each pupil. A school’s careers programme should embed equality and diversity considerations throughout.	It provides a personalised service with career, education and training suggestions individually tailored to each student, increasing their self-awareness and understanding of the world of work. It can be used as a tool to support one-to-one guidance.
Linking curriculum learning to careers	All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of future career paths.	Subject suggestions are based on student’s interests, preferences and the criteria they need for their intended career directions. Web access means availability to information across curriculum and throughout all school years. There are nearly 700 career descriptions, including a broad range of STEM careers; these descriptions highlight the routes to each career and entry requirements.
Encounters with employers & employees	Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment activities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes.	Career and subject descriptions include: Video clips of employees talking about their job roles. Links to professional bodies and job sites.
Experiences of workplaces	Every pupil should have first-hand experiences of the workplace through work visits, work shadowing and/or work experience to help their exploration of career opportunities, and expand their networks.	A student’s career suggestions will highlight the areas where work experience is likely to be most beneficial.
Encounters with further & higher education	All pupils should understand the full range of learning opportunities that are available to them. This includes both academic and vocational routes and learning in schools, colleges, universities and in the workplace.	Appropriate courses and learning opportunities are highlighted according to student’s make-up and career intentions, allowing targeted research. Students can access links to local FE colleges. Linking to UCAS and Eunicas, students can access information on over 50,000 HE courses in the UK and Europe.
Personal guidance	Every pupil should have opportunities for guidance interviews with a career adviser, who could be internal (a member of school staff) or external, provided they are trained to an appropriate level. These should be available whenever significant study or career choices are being made. They should be expected for all pupils but should be timed to meet their individual needs.	Students can access impartial, independent careers information and advice, for free, from qualified and professional careers advisers within the school and via the Morrisby Careers platform.

Every student, parent and or carer should have access to good quality information about future study options and Labour Market opportunities.

These are the jobs that are in demand in the UK right now.

Exploring these jobs will help you to understand the type of people and skills employers are looking for right now. This should help you to think about your own skills and the subject choices you are making. Or, if you’re about to start applying for jobs, knowing which jobs are in demand will help you to target your job search at certain industries and employers.

Careerometer can be used to explore and compare key information about occupations, help you learn about different occupations and identify potential careers. It provides access to a selection of UK headline data relating to pay, weekly hours of work and future employment prospects for different occupations, as well as description of the occupation. Simply type in the title of the job you are interested in and the widget provides a series of options from which you can select the most relevant to you. You can then look up another two occupations and compare. You can also select ‘display the UK average’ and compare the information with the occupation you have selected.
